What we do

  • Shop and garage pads
  • House pads and foundation prep
  • Grain bin pads
  • RV, equipment and storage pads
  • Fill and compaction in layers
  • Built to your plans and grade stakes

How we build a pad

A soft or uneven pad leads to cracked concrete, sticking doors and sloped floors.

  1. Strip the topsoil. Black dirt and organic material come out. Nothing soft stays under your building.
  2. Build it up. We bring the pad to grade with clean fill, laid and compacted in 6-inch layers.
  3. Cap it. A layer of crushed gravel on top gives a firm, level surface for concrete or a building floor.
  4. Check the grade. We check the finished height and level against your plans before we leave.

Height and drainage

Water should always run away from a building. We build pads above the surrounding ground and make them about 2 feet bigger than the building on every side, so water drains away from your walls.

Calgary clay swells when wet and shrinks when dry. Removing the topsoil and building up with compacted gravel gives your slab a stable base that does not move with the seasons.

Need compaction testing?

Some lenders, engineers and building permits ask for proof that the pad was compacted properly. We can arrange third-party compaction testing so you have it in writing.

How much does shop pad prep cost?

A 40 × 60 ft shop pad with 12 inches of compacted build-up runs about $15,000–$19,000 + GST.

Every site is different. Soil, access and how far material has to travel all change the price. Try the cost estimator for your project, then we will confirm it with a free written quote.

Questions about shop and building pads

How much bigger than the building should the pad be?

We build pads about 2 feet bigger on every side. This helps water drain away and gives room for forms.

Do I need compaction testing?

If you have an engineered slab, a lender or a permit that asks for it, yes. For a simple storage pad, it is often optional. We can arrange testing either way.

How long after the pad can I pour concrete?

Usually right away, once the pad is compacted and checked. Your concrete contractor will want to see it first.

Can you build pads in winter?

Sometimes, but fill should never be placed frozen. Spring through fall is best for pads.
